The rufous-bellied niltava is a large, stocky, brightly coloured flycatcher, 15 to 18cm long and weighing 19 to 24g, with a rounded head, fairly short tail and broad-based bill. It is found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Thailand and Vietnam, in subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest and moist montane forest (Wikipedia, general species account).
Its diet mainly consists of small invertebrates and larvae, especially ants and beetles, with occasional fruit. It feeds by perching quietly in the undergrowth and darting out or dropping to the ground to catch prey. It feeds alone or in pairs, sometimes joining mixed-species flocks, and tends to be more solitary in winter.
