The greater short-toed lark is a small passerine, dark-streaked greyish brown above and white below, with a strong pointed pinkish bill, a pale supercilium, dark patches on each side of the neck and a dark tail. It breeds in southern Europe, north-west Africa and across the Palearctic from Turkey and southern Russia to Mongolia (Wikipedia, general species account).
It nests on the ground, laying two or three eggs. During migration the birds form large, tight flocks that move in unison, and at other times loose flocks; flocks often fly together to water in the mornings. In colonial India they were hunted for food as ortolans. The account opened does not name Bhutan.
