Petaurista nobilis
Habitat
Himalayan forest, mostly 1,500–3,000m; recorded down to 800m
Range
Central and eastern Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim, far northern West Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh
The Bhutan giant flying squirrel, also called Gray's or the noble giant flying squirrel, is one of the largest flying squirrels and lives in Himalayan forests. Its range is narrow, restricted to central and eastern Nepal, Bhutan, and the Indian states of Sikkim, far northern West Bengal and western and central Arunachal Pradesh. Edward Blyth in 1863 treated it as a synonym of Hodgson's giant flying squirrel (Wikipedia, general species account).
Only in the late 1970s and early 1980s was it firmly established that the two species differ in colour pattern and size. Like other flying squirrels it is mainly nocturnal and glides long distances between trees on its patagium, though it has been seen at dawn and dusk. It seems to breed in March and April and has been seen feeding on the ground. Little is known of its behaviour.
