The white-throated dipper, also known as the European dipper or just dipper, is an aquatic passerine found in Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent. It is about 18cm long, rotund and short-tailed. The adult head is brown, the back slate-grey mottled with black, and the throat and upper breast white, followed by a band of warm chestnut merging into black on the belly and flanks (Wikipedia, general species account).
The clutch can contain one to eight eggs but four or five are usual, smooth and glossy white and laid daily; the female incubates, fed by the male. The male has a sweet wren-like song and, in courtship, sings while running and posturing, displaying his snowy breast. It flies rapidly and straight, calling a shrill 'zil', and walks and runs on banks and rocks seeking invertebrates. The account opened does not name Bhutan.
