Range
Himalayas from Uttarakhand east across Nepal to north-east India and Southeast Asia as far south as Thailand
The scarlet finch is a small passerine of the finch family found in the Himalayas from Uttarakhand eastwards across Nepal, stretching to the hills of north-east India and Southeast Asia as far south as Thailand. It is resident in the Himalayas, but many birds winter to the immediate south, and its natural habitat is temperate forest (Wikipedia, general species account).
The name sipahi comes from the Hindustani word for a soldier or sepoy, for the red uniform worn by those in the East India Company's employment. It was formerly placed in the monotypic genus Haematospiza but moved to the rosefinch genus Carpodacus on molecular evidence. The source read does not name Bhutan, and gives no size, diet or breeding information.
