Hodgson's frogmouth is a nocturnal bird in the same group as the nightjars, with the same bristles around the bill, but a heavier bill, shorter, more rounded wings and an upright posture when perched. The plumage is soft, cryptic mottled brown and grey like tree bark, and it differs from other frogmouths by a heavier black marking above the breast and no rufous on the breast (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is found in Bhutan, Bangladesh, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, and is entirely tree-living, found mainly in the middle and lower storeys of evergreen or mixed forest. It lives mainly on insects. The male incubates by day, which is why he is duller than the female, who defends the territory at night. The best way to identify it is by its call.
