Güldenstädt's redstart, also called the white-winged redstart, is one of the largest redstarts, 18cm long and 21 to 29g. It is found in the high mountains of the south-western and central Palearctic, in the Caucasus, Karakoram, Pamir, Himalaya, Tian Shan and Altai, including Bhutan. The adult male is black above except for a white crown, a white wing patch and an orange-red tail, with a black throat and upper breast and rich orange-red underparts (Wikipedia, general species account).
It breeds at high altitudes from 3,600 to 5,200m in alpine meadows and rock-fields, moving slightly lower, to 1,500 to 4,800m, in winter, mainly in subalpine Hippophae scrub; some northern populations migrate further, reaching north-eastern China. It feeds on fruit and a wide variety of invertebrates. The female and immature male are brown above and orange-buff below with an orange-red tail.
