Buteo japonicus
Range
East Asia and some parts of Russia and South Asia; some birds winter in Southeast Asia
The eastern buzzard, or Japanese buzzard, is a medium to large bird of prey, sometimes considered a subspecies of the common buzzard. Molecular studies showed the common buzzard as then defined was not a single lineage, which led to the eastern buzzard and the Himalayan buzzard being treated as distinct species (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is native to East Asia and some parts of Russia and South Asia, with some birds wintering in Southeast Asia, and it includes several subspecies, one of which breeds in Siberia, Mongolia, northern China and North Korea and winters in Southeast Asia. It is similar to the steppe buzzard. The source read gives no Bhutan-specific information, so its occurrence there is flagged for checking.
