The collared falconet is a very small falcon, about 18cm long, shrike-like in shape and mainly black and white, with bold white eyebrows and collar and a relatively heavy double-toothed bill. It has shortish wings, a medium-length tail and strong half-feathered legs and powerful feet. Rapid wingbeats are interspersed with long glides (Wikipedia, general species account).
It perches conspicuously on the top or edge of a tree or bush, often on a dead twig, bobbing its head and slowly moving its tail up and down. Its habitat is forest, often on the edges of broadleaf forest, mostly at 200 to 800m and fairly regularly up to 1,700m. It is found in the Himalayan foothills of north India, Nepal and Bhutan, and from Myanmar to Vietnam.
